'Ciglana SPREMO' DOO is a factory for manufacturing of bricks from clay located in a village of Gornja Rogatica in the northern Serbia.
The factory was using animal carcasses as a process fuel, without having a legal permit and air filters. Additionally, the animal waste resulting from the factory process added to the existing problem of uncontrolled dump site near the village. In 2011, the local environmental NGO 'Hrast' supported by villagers of Gornja Rogatica organized protests in front of the factory. The protesters complained that the smell coming from the factory make them nauseating and affect their everyday activities and their life quality. The same year NGO 'Vojvodjanska zelena inicijativa' filmed a documentary movie in order to promote the Gornja Rogatica case among wider public.
The case was investigated by the Inspectorate for Environmental Protection. The results of the factory inspection confirmed the illegal and uncontrolled use of animal carcasses as a process fuel, which resulted in the factory being officially banned to continue with that practice. However, as these measures did not bring positive results and the factory continued operating as usual, the NGO activists and villagers organized another protest and sent a complaint letter to the Environmental Inspectorate. The factory was finally closed and charges were raised against its owner in 2012. However, there are no information if the uncontrolled dump site was properly sanitized .
